Soft Ankle Supports
Soft ankle supports are typically made of elastic fabric and provide mild support and warmth primarily through compression. They are suitable for the recovery phase following minor ankle sprains or for preventing minor injuries during sports activities. While they help reduce swelling and enhance proprioception, they cannot effectively restrict significant rolling or twisting movements of the ankle. For patients with chronic ankle instability or those requiring high-level protection, the support provided may be insufficient; these braces are more commonly used for daily protection or as an aid during the later stages of rehabilitation.
Semi-rigid braces
Semi-rigid braces combine flexible materials with rigid plastic side panels; this design effectively restricts inversion and eversion movements of the ankle while still allowing for a certain range of motion. This makes them the preferred treatment option for moderate ankle sprains, as they provide necessary stability without the risk of muscle atrophy associated with complete immobilization. They are frequently used for early immobilization following acute injuries to help ligaments heal in the correct position, while allowing patients to engage in moderate weight-bearing walking, which promotes blood circulation and tissue repair.
Rigid braces
Rigid braces consist of a hard plastic or metal frame designed to completely immobilize the ankle in a functional position, entirely preventing joint movement in any direction. These braces are primarily used for severe ankle fractures, post-operative care following complete ligament ruptures, or acute-phase immobilization of severe sprains. By ensuring complete immobilization, they create a stable healing environment for bones and soft tissues, thereby preventing secondary injury. Since prolonged use can lead to joint stiffness and a decline in muscle strength, they are typically used for short periods under strict medical supervision and require regular follow-up assessments.
Inflatable braces
Inflatable braces feature internal, adjustable air bladders that provide uniform compression around the ankle when inflated; this offers firm support while effectively controlling swelling through compression. Their advantage lies in the ability to customize pressure based on patient comfort and the severity of swelling; they offer a snug fit and reduce the risk of pressure sores. These braces are commonly used for the conservative treatment of ankle fractures or during the early post-operative period. They serve as an alternative to traditional plaster casts, facilitating wound monitoring and skin care, while also being easy to remove for cleaning.
